AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude or Google Gemini can now write amazingly well and are generally helpful and useful when creating content. So what could be more obvious than integrating them directly into the WordPress backend? This is already possible with numerous generative AI plugins – I have taken a closer look at seven of them and will explain what they can do and what they are suitable for in this article:

Excursus: My career and my attitude towards AI texting tools
So that you understand my background: I’ve been writing for a living for 30 years now. I have completed a classical journalistic training, have been an editorial manager several times, run my own internet projects and help companies with all aspects of content. In short: when it comes to online content, I know my stuff.
I have found AI tools exciting for many years and have tested them again and again. Unfortunately, they were never really usable – until ChatGPT came out at the end of November 2022. It completely amazed me. Since then, AI tools have been part of my toolbox. They help me, for example, to come up with ideas, talk through a topic or create an initial outline. I also find them useful for finding information in large documents, such as legal texts or scientific papers. These are just a few examples.
Others see it primarily as a way to create content extremely quickly and inexpensively. After all, ChatGPT writes you a detailed article within seconds. A description text for the online shop is created just as quickly from a dull product data sheet.
What are AI WordPress plugins good for?
Conventional AI tools such as ChatGPT can write well, but their interface is not optimised for this task. Instead, it is designed for chats of all kinds and is therefore kept very general, without special options or menus for content creation. You also have to copy and paste the text into your WordPress backend. Convenient is different.
And it’s not just about text. ChatGPT offers an image generator called Dall-E, for example. This can be used to create visual content of all kinds. Well-known alternatives in this area are Midjourney and Ideogram. Big names such as Adobe and Getty Images now also offer such functions. They are primarily competing with stock photo platforms. Here too, it is more convenient if you generate the images directly where you create your content. Then you don’t have to download them from the service provider and upload them to your website again.
As you will see, the AI WordPess plugins presented here also offer image generators and even other functions such as chatbots for customer service.
For this article, I’ll limit myself to the topic of texts and images, because almost every website needs them.
I am aware that there is a lot of criticism of AI tools and what they are used for and how they are used. It would go beyond the scope of this article to go into this. Instead, I assume that your decision in favour of using AI has already been made. Now I would like to answer your question: Which plugin is particularly suitable for this and why?
The 7 best AI WordPress plugins
AI Engine – the most used
With over 80,000 active installations, AI Engine is the most used plugin in this comparison. You create texts and images in a separate area in the WordPress backend, away from the regular editor. Incidentally, this is how most of the plugins I looked at work. In addition, there is a “playground” for AI tasks of all kinds, useful functions such as translation and an assistant that is always available directly in the editor. A chatbot function is also included.

My conclusion
A special feature of AI Engine is the great flexibility of the possible AI providers. In addition to the classic ChatGPT, these include Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini. But that’s not all: platforms such as OpenRouter, Replicate and Hugging Face give you the choice between tens of thousands of other models for texts and images. You can even use locally installed AI – provided you have the appropriate technical expertise. And it’s fully integrated into WordPress. That suits me very well, because ChatGPT is often considered the standard these days. Only a few users use alternatives. However, this can make perfect sense, as some models are better suited to some tasks than others. For example, I personally prefer the Claude AI when it comes to text. And a locally installed AI is interesting for companies, for example, because no data is then sent outside. Another bonus with AI Engine: the user interface is at least partly in German, while all other plugins are only available in English. I also liked the layout of AI Engine in my test, as it is both tidy and offers functions for advanced users.
However, there are also a few stumbling blocks in addition to the advantages mentioned. For example, the editor does not save anything: If users navigate to another menu item and return later, the content is gone. This is not ideal.
Price
The Pro version is available from 59 US dollars per year. There is also a free version with a limited range of functions. You pay for the use of AI itself via the respective providers, such as OpenAI.
AI Power – what we recommend
The AI Power plugin is similar to AI Engine in many respects. Here, too, you create texts and images in a separate area. There is also a general “Playground” to use your AI assistant directly in the backend and a chatbot function. The plugin also advertises the fact that you can store information about your company and your products, for example, so that the AI gives the most correct answers possible. There is also a WooCommerce integration to create product descriptions, for example.
In all of this, alternatives to ChatGPT can also be used with AI Power: Google and OpenRouter are among them, Claude is unfortunately missing. For images, you can use OpenAI’s Dall-E as well as alternatives such as Stable Diffusion or Flux. Interesting: In addition to the image AI, the free stock photo platforms Pexels and Pixabay are integrated.

My conclusion
In my opinion, AI Power is more beginner-friendly than AI Engine. One example is the “Express Mode” when writing, which has a particularly tidy interface. If you also want to influence the text results even more, you can do this too: for example, the prompts for each step in the article creation process can be customised manually. That’s perfect – and not just for professionals. I also found the “Role Manager” useful for teams: this is where you define which functions are available to which user role.
As with the text AIs, the same applies to the image AIs: in my opinion, more choice is better, because different tools have different strengths and weaknesses. However, I would like to be able to save settings as templates for the image generator, for example.
All in all, AI Power is not perfect either. Nevertheless, AI Power is a plugin worth recommending, especially in direct comparison with the alternatives.
Price
You can get the Pro version from USD 9.99 per month, USD 95.88 per year or USD 289.99 as a one-off payment. There is also a free version with a smaller range of functions. And here, too, you pay extra for the use of AI.
GetGenie
While both AI Engine and AI Power are aimed at both professionals and beginners in my opinion, GetGenie is primarily aimed at technical newcomers. One big difference: While you need a developer account with the desired AI providers for the other plugins, GetGenie handles this for you in this case.
The range of functions is similar: you create texts and images with AI help, there is a chatbot function and a WooCommerce connection. A bonus: GetGenie also comes with various search engine optimisation (SEO) functions.

My conclusion
In my opinion, GetGenie’s handling of the AI provider connection is very easy to get started with, especially for non-experts. GetGenie also scores with its SEO functions. On the one hand, I think this makes a lot of sense, as this topic affects practically everyone who creates content. On the other hand, specialised plugins such as Yoast SEO or Squirrly SEO will always offer more. In this respect: The SEO functions alone are admittedly no reason to rely on GetGenie. But it’s not wrong that they exist. Furthermore, in my opinion, GetGenie’s user interface was particularly flexible and easy to understand – even for beginners.
Professionals, on the other hand, will miss some options. For example, I have not found a direct way to set the tonality of a text. And the prompts for the individual steps obviously cannot be customised.
Despite these disadvantages, GetGenie is my recommendation for people who are not developers and want to deal with technical details and questions as little as possible.
Price
The paid version is available from 9.00 US dollars per month or 72.00 US dollars per year. AI usage is included here, with higher limits for the larger tariffs. A free version is also available: among other things, it offers 2,500 AI-written words per month – enough for a test.
AI Muse
AI Muse is very similar to the three plugins already presented. You can have content created by AI – both individually and in bulk. OpenAI, Google and the OpenRouter platform can be connected, but only OpenAI in the free version. AI Muse also advertises a seamless connection to WooCommerce, the Block Editor and the WordPress Site Editor. There is also an area for generating images. OpenAI’s Dall-E is available for this purpose.

My conclusion
A special feature compared to the other examples is the statistics section, which allows you to see exactly what costs are incurred by the AI providers.
In general, the range of functions is good. In this respect, I personally keep an eye out for future updates. In its current state, however, I would recommend the plugin more for developers and less for amateurs. This is partly due to the lack of onboarding.
Price
You can get the paid version from USD 5.99 per month or USD 50.04 per year. You pay extra for the use of AI from the respective provider. A free version with fewer functions is also available.
WP Wand
WP Wand focuses entirely on integrating itself into the editor. This means that you don’t write your texts in a separate area, but directly where you normally do. This includes the Gutenberg Editor, the Classic Editor, the Elementor Page Builder and WooCommerce. Numerous templates are available to help you get started. With the “Headline Generator”, for example, you can create suggestions for headlines, with the “Blog Outline” an outline, etc. You can choose to create a post step by step or in one go at the touch of a button. I find it interesting that WP Wand is testing the link to SEO plugins in a beta. Currently these are Rank Math and Yoast SEO. Unfortunately, WP Wand does not offer an image generator.

My conclusion
Personally, I think the approach of writing texts in an ordinary place is very good. But that is certainly also a matter of taste.
Price
The paid version is available from USD 49.00 per year or a one-off payment of USD 99. AI usage is extra. As usual, the free version has a smaller range of functions.
AI Content Writing and Chat with ChatGPT
This plugin was originally called “Live Chat Button” and was designed to offer customer service via WhatsApp directly on the website. It still offers this function today.
As you can see from the current name, the scope has changed and expanded in the meantime. Today, you can create texts and images using AI. In addition – as the name suggests – a ChatGPT-supported chatbot can also be implemented.

My conclusion
The content creation works well. The interfaces look very similar to the features in other plugins. In this respect, this plugin could be suitable if you are particularly interested in the chatbot function and everything else plays more of a secondary role.
Price
The paid version is available from 60.00 euros per year. AI use is also extra here. The free version already includes many functions.
AI ChatBot with ChatGPT and Content Generator by AYS
You can tell from the name of this plugin that the focus is not on creating content, but on chatbots. Out of curiosity, I took a look at it anyway, as the plugin page itself also advertises the functions for generating text and images.

My conclusion
However, I had to realise: If you are primarily looking for content, this is not the right place for you. If, on the other hand, you are primarily looking for a solution for an AI chatbot and just want to create some content on the side, you can take a look at it. However, in such a case, I would rather recommend the above-mentioned plugin “AI Content Writing and Chat with ChatGPT”, because the free version in particular offers a better range of functions.
Price
The paid version is available from a one-off payment of 75.00 US dollars. As with almost all plugins, AI usage is extra. A free version is also available here.

In this article, Jan gives you practical tips for good prompts and shows how the tools can help with brainstorming, research and refining content to increase the quality of AI texts.
Conclusion on AI WordPress plugins
When trying out these plugins, one thing in particular became clear to me: WordPress plugins for generative AI are still in their infancy. They already do a lot and can be useful. At the same time, none of them map the entire content workflow. They focus primarily on content creation, which I personally prefer not to leave to AI. For other tasks, there is at best a general “playground”.
What I am missing, among other things, are functions for finding ideas and researching topics. Another typical example that no plugin covers directly: I have written a piece of content and now need text for social media posts. An AI can do that very well. It would be great if I could do this in the backend.
At the same time, these plugins are developing rapidly. At the beginning of my test, GetGenie did not yet have an image generator. In this respect, I am definitely keeping an eye on developments in this area. And for many simple applications, the first three plugins mentioned are already recommended.
