There are several plugins for WordPress and WooCommerce that you can use to create surveys or quizzes. You can use them to collect opinions, ideas or feedback from your readers. We have tried out various survey plugins for you and will show you which one is particularly suitable for your blog or website.
Comments do not replace surveys
Anyone who runs a website, blog or online store with WordPress usually wants to enter into a dialog with their target group. Regardless of whether you are the operator of a store and want to find out about interest in products, variants or price models, whether you want to ask for opinions on a topic in your magazine or whether you need feedback on your products and services in support.
Even if WordPress already offers a channel for feedback and exchange with the comment function, the effort required to enter their name, email address and then a comment with added value is too great for most users. And then, if necessary, to regularly check whether there is a response. All the examples described above can also be solved much more simply: With a survey.
Survey plugins: these options are available
These are usually one or more questions that you can ask your readers. They then answer them using options that you specify beforehand. Of course, these can also be free entries, text fields or sliders - depending on how complex you need the results to be.
This allows users to express their opinion with just a few clicks and without much effort. Over time, this will provide you with a valuable pool of data that you can use to improve your blog, your store or your service.
Important: Take data protection into account for surveys
But the question now is: what is the best way to implement such surveys on your site? You can find numerous results in the WordPress plugin directory by searching for the terms "survey " - or alternatively "poll" or "quiz". In some cases, you can also implement surveys with a normal contact form plugin for WordPress and WooCommerce, see our article Contact form plugins for WordPress - the best in comparison.
So that you don't have to try them all, we have installed and tested the best survey plugins for you and show them to you in our overview.
Quiz and Survey Master - Exam and Survey Plugin
- Developer: ExpressTech
- Active installations: over 40,000
- Ratings: 5 out of 5 stars with 1,100 ratings
In addition to surveys, the free WordPress plugin Quiz and Survey Master also comes with all kinds of quiz functions that you can use, for example, to test your readers' knowledge or promote a lead magnet. With over 100 options for customizing the surveys, you can adapt them exactly to the look and feel of your website. This is important, as the surveys should fit into your site as intuitively as possible to avoid looking like a foreign object.
With over 35 add-ons - both free and paid - this plugin can then be expanded even further. For example, certificates and leaderboards (free of charge) or analyses, exports, Google Analytics or Mailchimp integration. The paid add-ons cost between 19 and 49 US dollars.
With over 40,000 active installations, "Quiz and Survey Master" scores top marks with over 1,100 ratings. Pleasing in comparison to other survey plugins: The extension already includes most of the functions in the basic version.
Formidable Form Builder - Contact Form, Survey & Quiz Forms
- Developer: Strategy11
- Active installations: over 300,000
- Ratings: 4.5 out of 5 stars from 750 reviews
Formidable Form Builder is, as the name suggests, primarily a plugin for forms. In essence, however, surveys are nothing more than forms - which is why they can also be implemented with this plugin without any problems. For example, there is the option of linking certain entries with each other and thus creating a logic within the form that adapts depending on the user's entries. This is particularly practical for nested or dependent questions.
This WordPress plugin can also be used to create contact forms, a quiz or all kinds of calculators. The basic version is sufficient for most applications. If you want more, you have to switch to the premium version, which costs between 49 and 300 US dollars. For example, it offers the option of connecting a CRM or creating surveys with several pages. If you plan your plugin usage well in advance, you may be able to cover other applications with this one extension - thanks to its high functionality. This may put the costs into perspective.
With over 300,000 active installations, "Formidable Form Builder" is one of the most popular plugins in its sector. With over 750 ratings, it has 4.5 out of five possible stars.
YOP Poll
- Developer: yourownprogrammer
- Active installations: over 20,000
- Ratings: 4.5 out of 5 stars from 400 reviews
The YOP Poll plugin is a pure poll plugin that contains many ready-made styles and designs that you can use immediately. In addition to creating, editing and deleting polls, you can also duplicate them. This is particularly useful if you frequently create similar polls and don't always want to start from scratch.
You also have the option of displaying the results of the survey to your website users immediately and in various ways, scheduling surveys in advance (start and end time), restricting the survey to certain user groups (for example, only to registered users) and blocking participants by cookie or IP address to prevent misuse.
It is annoying that it is only possible to ask one question per poll with "YOP Poll". Nevertheless, the plugin is actively used by over 20,000 websites and has 400 ratings with 4.5 out of five possible stars.
Perfect Survey
- Developer: Webaid
- Active installations: over 2,000
- Ratings: 5 out of 5 stars with 25 ratings
The Perfect Survey plugin also specializes purely in surveys. It has an intuitive drag-and-drop builder that makes it easy to place the individual elements in the right place. In addition, the plugin has already been translated into 12 languages. It can therefore be used in English-speaking countries as well as in Europe and even Asia. Anyone who runs an international website will appreciate this.
All data can be exported as a CSV file and then processed into graphs and diagrams using Excel or Numbers, for example. The plugin also supports single choice surveys as well as multiple choice, ratings or the selection of images. With "Perfect Survey" there is no premium model and no paid add-ons: everything is free and can be used without any additional costs.
This is probably one of the reasons why the plugin gets full marks and five out of five stars. However, it is only actively used on 2,000 websites and there are only 25 reviews. For a test, however, this result is definitely promising.
Poll, Survey & Quiz
- Developer: OpinionStage
- Active installations: over 10,000
- Ratings: 4.5 out of 5 stars from 250 reviews
The name of the Poll, Survey & Quiz plugin also reveals its functions: This plugin is aimed at anyone who wants to create surveys, polls or a quiz on their website. There are ready-made templates for all three formats, which you only need to adapt and publish with your content.
With this plugin, it is also possible to display or export the results of the surveys immediately in real time. You can also use user interaction to generate leads via integrated call-to-action buttons or newsletter integrations. If you want to create a so-called "viral quiz", you can also activate sharing via social media.
The basic version of "Poll, Survey & Quiz" is free of charge. If you want more, you have to budget between 19 and 199 US dollars. It is a little annoying that the development team also measures this based on the views of the surveys: If your surveys are loaded more than 250 times per month, you must already use the paid version. Even small blogs should reach this threshold early on, depending on where they are integrated. If you place your poll in the sidebar, you only need 9 clicks per day to exceed this threshold.
The plugin currently runs on over 10,000 WordPress installations and currently receives 4.5 out of five stars with 250 ratings.
Conclusion: Surveys with WordPress are child's play
From this selection - and the more than 500 other survey plugins in the WordPress plugin directory - you can see that implementing surveys, polls or a quiz is not a big problem. The only thing that is more complicated is the legal framework.
Of course, you should pay attention to the GDPR and data protection. This applies in particular to the storage of cookies, IP addresses or the retrieval of personal data within your surveys - for example, if you want to link your surveys to your CRM or newsletter program and collect leads. Here you should get support to analyze your plugin and your planned surveys in detail to avoid warnings.
It can also lead to problems or unanswered questions if you do not create surveys directly on your website, but integrate them from external providers, for example via iFrame, as data is then always transferred. As a rule, the collection and storage of this information must be noted in your privacy policy, and you should have the exact wording drafted by experienced experts.
Also find out in advance which plugin functions are free of charge. This way, you won't find out whether your desired functions might cost you anything until after you've set them up. Once all of this has been clarified, surveys and polls are a great way to get to know your readers better. If you know their opinion on certain topics or your service, you can also make them happier. Or develop new content ideas from them.
