WordCamp Europe 2016 was the largest in the world to date. The organization and the quality of the presentations also lived up to this claim. We have compiled an overview of the most important content.
The technical organization was already excellent at WordCamp Nuremberg in April. Some of the session videos were posted online on the same day. WordCamp Europe 2016 went one step further and offered a livestream of all sessions. This allowed the rest of the world to follow and comment on the presentations, Q&As and discussions live.
Instead of describing our impression of the sessions here, we have compiled a collection of articles, resources and opinions to give you a comprehensive impression of WordCamp Europe. We've also included links to all the videos, slides and background information we know about.
Do you know of any content that is missing from our list? Just write a comment and we will add it to this overview.
Indispensable: The interview with Matt Mullenweg
The interview with Matt Mullenweg was uploaded on the weekend of the conference. The Automattic CEO provides insights into his company and comments on current developments. For example, Mullenweg describes many of his current company pillars as potential billion-dollar enterprises and discusses the future of WordPress as an "operating system for the open web".
The most important contents of the interview can also be found summarized by our colleagues at Torque. Among other things, the Americans attach great importance to information on the current market position of WordPress. The editorial team has also published a summary of WordCamp Europe 2016 in pictures, their own experience report and a summary of Edmund Turbin's presentation on theme development for beginners on the WP-Enginge blog.
Our colleagues at WP-Tavern also took a closer look at the interview with the co-founder of WordPress.
WordCamp Europe 2016 now with its own summary
The WordCamp Europe team has created its own overview of all the materials, videos and blog posts that they are aware of. You can find the extensive list here - including photos. In addition, the organizers have linked to some very good photos of the events on flickr.
The WordCamp team has also published an official WordCamp Europe 2016 coloring book and several wallpapers 🙂
Testimonials and opinions
As is the case after every WordCamp, opinions and experience reports from members of the community are gradually appearing after WordCamp Europe. Some of them describe very personal impressions, others focus on the organization, others on the content.
Caspar Hübinger, for example, does the latter in an article accompanying his highly acclaimed lecture "Caring is the coolest thing I've ever seen anyone do". He succinctly summarizes the most important content and also links to the video of the original lecture.
The podcast "5 Seconds of Fame" by WP-Sofa.de, in which Hans Helge Bürger, Marc Nilius and Sven Wagner describe their impressions of WordCamp Europe, is more of an entertaining intermezzo than a systematic overview.
The guys from Presswerk provide a more detailed look at the organization, the location and the sessions. In the latest edition of their podcast, they report directly from Contributor Day at WordCamp Europe 2016.
Other bloggers, freelancers and community members have also dedicated themselves to summarizing and evaluating WordCamp Europe:
- Rachel Martin, Happiness Engeneer at Automattic, has put a very personal experience report online
- The colleagues from Torque have created a summary in the form of a tweet overview
- Austrian blogger and data analyst Verena Haunschmid summarizes and evaluates nine sessions in her English-language blog post
Sessions of WordCamp Europe 2016 and additional material
This time, the entire WordCamp was broadcast via livestream on the internet. As far as we know, the stream ran smoothly and in high quality. Traditionally, the sessions at WordCamps are always recorded and then published on wordpress.tv. At the moment you can find some of the sessions there, but not all of them. So be sure to check back regularly, as all sessions should be uploaded gradually. However, the WordCamp team has already put some live recordings of the three stream tracks online. Here is the WordCamp Europe session schedule for your orientation.
Individual presentations have already been posted online with additional material, i.e. the slides or comments from the authors. For example, Morten Rand-Hendriksen's presentation on empathy and acceptance in web design. In addition to the slide deck, the author provides a short summary of the presentation.
Jeremy Felt has published the slides for his presentation "Multisite!" on his website. The presentation by Edmund Turbin, Sales Engineer at WP Engine, on "Theming in WordPress" has also been uploaded as a slide deck.
You can also find these lectures online:
- "Thinking outside the boxmodel. An introduction to flexbox" by Luc Princen
- "Themes and plugins in harmony" by Ulrich Pogson
- "Seven times faster" by Peter Wilson
- "Moving the desing process to the browser" by Lucijan Blagonić
- an even more extensive list of presentations and materials can be found on the WordCamp Europe 2016 website
A lot more will be published
More blog posts, slide decks and videos from WordCamp Europe should be published in the coming days. We will therefore update this blog post regularly so that as many valuable resources and opinions as possible are collected in this post.
Do you have another piece of information, source or resource that we haven't included? No problem: just post a comment and we will add the relevant content to the overview!
